With all the talk about divisions in our society, wouldn’t it feel great to get behind something that is helping to unite North Carolina? The MST is literally and figuratively such a project.
The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) is North Carolina’s flagship hiking trail, stretching 1,175 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the Outer Banks. Along the way, the trail passes through towns and cities as it connects communities across the state in addition to the unrivaled natural beauty of North Carolina.
While it’s possible to trek across the entire state on the MST, the majority of people use the trail as a community resource near where they live for a short hike in the woods, stroll along the greenway or a way to get outside and connect with nature. A growing number of residents and visitors use the MST to explore different parts of North Carolina too. In short, the MST offers something for everyone, be it half-an-hour of exercise or a months-long adventure.
One of the most meaningful benefits of the trail is how it draws people together, promoting connections among those from all different parts of the state and different walks of life. It is a unique and unifying community-building project. Working side-by-side on trail crews, meeting as hikers on the trail, joining together to plan segments for their communities, North Carolinians have a chance to get to know each other and work toward a common goal – a trail for present and future generations.
Friends of the MST is the vibrant nonprofit organization that brings together volunteers, hikers and communities to build, maintain and promote the trail. Our reach to trail enthusiasts and community leaders grows steadily as awareness of the trail expands.
