Orange County Workday @ James M. Johnston Nature Preserve Trail

We will be improving the trail through James M. Johnston Nature Preserve. Work includes:

–reroute of the trail around the steep slope
–repairing existing trail

Some of the work will involve moving heavy rocks and working on a serious hillside, however (before I scare you all away) there will be lighter work on less hilly ground.

Meet at 9 am at Occoneechee Speedway (320 Elizabeth Brady Road, Hillsborough). Park in the parking area and walk through the gate to the meeting area by the trucks.

Wear work clothes appropriate for the weather and solid shoes or boots and bring lunch, snacks, water and work gloves. Tools will be provided.

On Martin Luther King Day, we will work with the Eno River Association to haul trash and debris from along the river and trail at Penny’s Bend. With enough volunteers, we will work on privet as well.

Meet at Penny’s Bend at 9 am. We expect to finish around lunchtime. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing and bring water and snacks.

Sauratown Trail Workday @ Rockhouse Road and Thore Road

We will be working on Sections 6 & 7 to

  • Remove a retired bridge
  • Clear small downed trees
  • Clear a few larger trees

Meet at 10 am at the intersection of Rockhouse Road and Thore Road (N36° 24.670′ W80° 21.920′).

Recommended tools are loppers, handsaw, hammer, crowbar, mattock, shovel.

Pisgah National Forest 5th Annual Wolf Pit Trail Workday @ Wolf Pit Trail

We will work jointly with the US Forest Service on the Wolf Pit Trail. Work will range from trimming to moderate and intensive trail work. We will complete work by about 1 pm.

Bring daypack, gloves, lunch or snack and fluids for the day. If you have them, bring safety glasses and hard hat. We will provide tools.

Meet at Morganton K-Mart at 8:30 or at the Linville Boat Launch on Hwy 126 near the entrance to Wolf Pit at 8:45.

Gathering of Friends @ Surf City, NC

Join us for the annual Gathering of Friends at Surf City. You’ll get to hear the latest MST news, meet fellow trail enthusiasts, learn new skills and explore some of the special places along the Coastal Crescent route of the MST.

Highlights include:

Kick-off reception at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center followed by dinner next door at Surf City’s Community Center.

Keynote speaker at the member meeting on Saturday is Walker Golder, Atlantic Flyway Coast Director at National Audubon Society.

Guided hikes and excursions will showcase the natural beauty and special places along the MST route in Pender and Oslow counties.
