Our first regularly scheduled Eno River FMST workday of 2025 is this Saturday January 25th, 9AM meeting at the Fews Ford area Eno River State Park, 6101 Cole Mill Road. The very end of the road. This will be doing trail repair work on the Cox Mountain Trail.

The second workday is Sunday, January 26th, 9AM meeting at the River Forest Park Parking Area, 1000 Windermere Drive in Durham. This will be planting trees along the MST.

Why two workdays? Last summer we put in an order of trees with the NC Forest Service, and a week ago they arrived and they need to be put in the ground! These are native trees, wet root trees that we can plant along the river. A mixture of hardwoods and pines.

The story is there were a lot of large trees in that area behind the River Forest and Eno Trace neighborhoods that got cut down when a new sewer line was installed. We started to plant trees, but despite Durham Water Management only having a 10-foot-wide access easement out there, they mowed a strip from 30 to 150 wide. The lack of tree roots out there is a huge erosion problem and also results in a lack of shade in the summer. Last year they finally agreed to mow only their 10-foot easement. Now we can plant trees in the area outside the 10-foot easement.

You will need to dress appropriately for the weather, though the forecast for this weekend is great, compared to the past week. Warmer and not raining or snowing.

We will provide tools. You will need to dress appropriately for the weather, wear boots or solid shoes and bring work gloves and water, snack; lunch if you plan to stay all day.
