SUMMARY:Special Eno River Workday - Planting Trees
DESCRIPTION:Special workday this Saturday\, January 18th\, 10AM\, meeting at the vacant lot next to 317 Omega Road in Durham. We will be planting trees!  Last summer we put in an order of trees with the NC Forest Service and they just arrived! These are native trees\, wet root trees that we can plant along the river. A mixture of hardwoods and pines. \nThe story is there were a lot of large trees in that area that got cut down when a new sewer line was installed. We started to plant trees\, but despite Durham water management only having a 10-foot-wide access easement out there\, they mowed a strip from 30 to 150 wide. The lack of tree roots out there is a huge erosion problem. Last year they finally agreed to mow only their 10-foot easement. Thus we can plant trees in that area\, outside the 10-foot easement. \nFor this Saturday there is a chance of rain\, so dress appropriately. \nWe will provide the tools. \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu

SUMMARY:Two FMST Eno River workdays this weekend\, Saturday and Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Our first regularly scheduled Eno River FMST workday of 2025 is this Saturday January 25th\, 9AM meeting at the Fews Ford area Eno River State Park\, 6101 Cole Mill Road. The very end of the road. This will be doing trail repair work on the Cox Mountain Trail. \nThe second workday is Sunday\, January 26th\, 9AM meeting at the River Forest Park Parking Area\, 1000 Windermere Drive in Durham. This will be planting trees along the MST. \nWhy two workdays? Last summer we put in an order of trees with the NC Forest Service\, and a week ago they arrived and they need to be put in the ground! These are native trees\, wet root trees that we can plant along the river. A mixture of hardwoods and pines. \nThe story is there were a lot of large trees in that area behind the River Forest and Eno Trace neighborhoods that got cut down when a new sewer line was installed. We started to plant trees\, but despite Durham Water Management only having a 10-foot-wide access easement out there\, they mowed a strip from 30 to 150 wide. The lack of tree roots out there is a huge erosion problem and also results in a lack of shade in the summer. Last year they finally agreed to mow only their 10-foot easement. Now we can plant trees in the area outside the 10-foot easement. \nYou will need to dress appropriately for the weather\, though the forecast for this weekend is great\, compared to the past week. Warmer and not raining or snowing. \nWe will provide tools. You will need to dress appropriately for the weather\, wear boots or solid shoes and bring work gloves and water\, snack; lunch if you plan to stay all day. \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu \nSee you on the trail!\nFred

SUMMARY:Annual Durham to Hillsborough hike (rescheduled) - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a rescheduled hike of the biggest gap in the Mountains-to-Sea Trail between Durham and Hillsborough.   For Spanish: https://conta.cc/47HglzP \nDate: Feb 1\, 2025\nRain Date: Feb 2\, 2025 \nMeeting Location: We’ll meet at 9 AM at the Eno River Parking Deck at the end of Nash and Kollock Street\, Hillsborough (36.073609291646854\, -79.10019701763281). This is adjacent to the Weaver Street Market\, a great place to pick up some trail snacks (but please don’t park in their lot for the duration of the hike). \nStarting Point: We will then leave half the cars in the (free) parking deck and carpool to our starting point\, the Cox Mountain trailhead in the Few’s Ford section of the Eno River State Park\, at the at the end of Cole Mill Road (6101 Cole Mill Road\, Durham). The ERSP has multiple parking areas\, we will meet at the one farthest into the park (go straight past the first three right turns and the last left turn). \nAt the end of the hike\, we will again carpool from Hillsborough back to the Cox Mountain parking area and those cars parked there. \nImportant: About half this hike will be a bushwack: over unmaintained social or no trail\, uneven ground with possible holes\, through sections of high brush\, crossing drainages and one stream\, potentially marshy areas and some quite steep slopes. If the ground is wet\, there may be slippery sections. \nThe total hike is roughly 9 miles. In the past it has taken 6-7 hrs. \nThe hwy 70 bridge is the end of the bushwack section. \nThe hike will traverse: \n\nThe ERSP suspension bridge across the Eno\nThe river leg of the ERSP’s Cox Mountain trail\nPassing the historic Fanny Breeze homestead\nAbout 5 miles of bushwack to hwy 70\nThe James M. Johnston Nature Preserve trail *\nPass near The Historic Occoneechee Speedway *\nClassic American Homes Preservation Trust trail *\nAgain crossing the Eno *\nPassing the Oxbow (Native American) Archaeology Site\nWestward on Hillsborough’s Riverwalk\nPast the Occaneechi (Native American) Village Replica Site\nAnd finally back to the parking deck and the parked cars.\n\n* There is a strong possibility that these segments will be the newest additions to the Eno River State Park by the hike date. \nIf you can join us: Please respond by email to Bill.Boyarsky@gmail.com by Jan 29\, 2025 — your response puts you on the notification list for update\, postponement\, or cancellation messages. \nWhat to bring: You will need to wear appropriate-for-the-weather clothes (that can get muddy or wet)\, solid shoes or boots\, and bring lunch\, snacks\, and water. \nCancellation: If the hike is postponed or canceled due to bad weather or high water\, an email will be sent out no later than 8 pm the preceding day (to the RSVP list). \nHope to be hiking with you.\nBill (& Fred)\nFriends of the MST Task Force Leaders\, Orange County (& Eno)

SUMMARY:CXLD: Eno River Section Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Due to the likelihood of there still being ice and/or show on Cox Mountain Saturday\, and the possibility of ice on the roads getting there\, the Saturday February 22nd trail maintenance workday is canceled. I hope that some of you will be able to come instead to the Sunday workday removing invasive thorny olive\, listed below. It should be warmer and dryer than Saturday. \nCXLD: Our next workday is Saturday February 22nd 9AM meeting at 6101 Cole Mill Road\, the loop parking area at the end of Cole Mill Road at the Fews Ford area of Eno River State Park. We will continue to do some much needed repairs on the Cox Mountain Trail\, starting with the location where Bill Boyarsky’s work day finished up. We will need some volunteers to move large\, heavy rocks with rock bars and the Spartacus. We will need more volunteers to help with removing trip rocks\, filling holes in the trail\, diverting water off the trail\, and other repairs. \nWe are focused this Spring on trail maintenance at Eno River State Park and will hopefully soon be able to do some much needed reroutes later this year and will hopefully be able to start work on building the next segment of the MST next year. \nFor this workday and the special workdays below you will need to wear boots or solid shoes\, work clothes and bring work gloves\, water\, a snack\, lunch if you plan to work past noon. Tools will be provided. RSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu \nSpecial invasive plant removal workdays:\nIn addition to the trail maintenance\, we still want to continue work on removing invasive plants along the MST and the Eno River. Some of you helped out on the planting of native trees recently. Thank you so much for that. The other side of planting natives is to remove invasives to give the natives a chance. \nInvasive workday 1\nIf any of you are available and want to help out\, I will be out doing some invasive removal\, this Sunday February 23rd 9AM\, meeting just past 5106 Laurel Ridge Road in Durham. Any of you want to join that would be great! We will be primarily removing thorny olive and some privet with weed wrenches\, and weather permitting cutting and poisoning the larger plants. This is a location where generally there is no parking allowed\, but we have special permission to park there on this one day. Tools will be provided. RSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu. \nThis is an interesting historic site\, part of the fish dam road\, currently overgrown with bamboo and other invasive plants. \nInvasive workday 2\nSaturday March 1st 9AM meeting at River Forest Park\, 1000 Windermere Drive in Durham\, to remove invasive privet. This is an area where we removed a lot of privet last year\, but there is some we missed and privet growing up from roots or seeds. Removing invasives is generally a multi-year task. RSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu

SUMMARY:Litter Cleanup-Segment 10: Cheek Rd. Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Join the MST Trashy Ladies for a morning of Stewardship. We are going to target a hot spot for dumping\, blow-outs\, and careless littering at the Cheek Rd. Trailheads. \n\n\nWe will clear litter from the trailheads on both sides of Cheek Rd. In addition\, we will work the roadside along the causeway and the shoreline at the fishing trails. This area needs a lot of attention. However\, this cleanup is NOT recommended for children. \nDress for the weather. We suggest long pants and long sleeves. The briers and grasses are growing and some critters might be out too. Bring water\, snacks and a daypack\, because we will work away from the parked cars. \nWe look forward to seeing everyone out there giving back to the trail. \nPlease go to FMST Meetup site to sign up for this event:  https://www.meetup.com/nc-fmst/events/306117338/?eventOrigin=group_upcoming_events \nJennifer and Iwona
