SUMMARY:Eno River Section Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Our next FMST Eno River Trail workday is Saturday October 26th\, meeting at 9AM-2PM at 317 Omega Road. \nNOTE THAT THIS IS A CHANGE IN LOCATION FROM WHAT WAS EARLIER ADVERTISED. \nThis is the same location where we worked in September. So far the weather forecast is great for Saturday. \nWe are getting a load of gravel delivered\, and with that we will be able to complete the minor trail reroute to move it back from the sewer line\, as well as to complete the repairs to the trail needed after the recent flooding. We may also insert some posts\, remove some invasive privet\, and other tasks. We have a lot of work to do. \nThis past spring Durham Water Management mowed a 10-foot-wide easement along the River Forest section\, a vast improvement over the 30- to 50-foot-wide easement they had mowed in the past. Next January/February we will be able to plant native trees out in this area to help restore the area and provide more shade for the trail. \nFor this workday you will need to wear work clothes you can get dirty\, boots or solid shoes\, and bring sunscreen\, insect repellent\, water. Bring lunch if you plan to work into the afternoon. In the event of adverse weather\, the workday will be canceled or postponed\, and an email to this effect will be sent out. \nTools will be provided \nFor more information or to RSVP email to fred.dietrich@duke.edu

SUMMARY:Falls Lake Trail Workday - Calling all Falls Lake Volunteers!
DESCRIPTION:Falls Lake Workday – Come help with trail work on the MST on Sunday November 10\, 2024! We are working on Sunday to avoid deer hunting season. \nPlease RSVP to jdbrewer104@gmail.com or 919-900-0483 for our workday by November 7\, 2024. \nFalls Lake Social Event – Save the Date – November 21\, 2024 – We will gather at the Salty Turtle in Wake Forest at 5:00 for happy hour to celebrate our year of trail work. More to follow after the workday. \nMeeting Spot at 9:00 AM – All interested should meet at Food Lion parking lot at the intersection of Patterson/Sherron and Highway 98. The address for your GPS is 121 Sherron Rd.\, Durham\, NC 27703. After we meet we will split up into project groups and “scatter out” to do our trail work. This workday is being limited to 75 volunteers to accommodate our current projects. \nProjects for the Day are:\n1. Chainsaw Crew Assistance. With all of the recent weather our chainsaw crews will need to help moving limbs and debris off the trail after they cut it. Our sawyers have received the necessary training to cut trees at Falls Lake. \n2. Fall Trail Maintenance – We will divide up into small groups and walk around 6 miles to perform trail maintenance. We have 63 miles of trail at Falls Lake to cover. \n3. Boardwalk demolition and boardwalk new construction. We have an old boardwalk on Section 21 that needs replacement. John P. and Eric M. will be your crew leaders that day. We will need to carry out the old lumber and carry in the new lumber and mix concrete. Decking battery power tools are needed. Crew size = 15 volunteers. \n4. Rip Rap rock placement at bridge foundation at our Little Lick Creek Bridge site with Gregory Scott. \n5. No Shoreline clean up trash removal for this workday….sorry about that! \nThanks to Great Outdoor Provision Company for sponsoring our breakfast from Chick-fli-A at our workdays. Thanks to Starbucks off Falls of Neuse Road and Durant Road for the coffee. Thanks to REI Co-op\, whose 2023 gift of $15\,000 supports our efforts with (among other things) signage improvement\, updates to trail guides\, the purchase of new tools\, and tool repairs. \nMake sure you bring plenty of water\, bag lunch\, and gloves. We supply all of the tools and projects. \nThe Falls Lake Task Force leaders recently had a meeting to discuss our weather policy for workdays if bad weather is present. If the workday is canceled a mass email will be sent by 9:00 PM on Friday. So please check your email first thing in the morning before leaving. \nIf you are new at trail work please let us know and we will pair you up with an experienced person. \nWhat you will need.\nWork clothes and solid shoes or hiking boots.\nProper Clothing for the Weather!\nPlenty of water\nLunch\nWork gloves\, if you have them (If not\, we have some) \nWork Safely. This is the most important thing\, and our main goal.\nIn particular:\nUse tools carefully. If you do not know how to use a particular tool\, or what to do in a particular circumstance please ask. Do not work too close together and be careful with rakes\, shovels\, and mattocks to avoid hitting the person next to you. When walking past another volunteer\, please say something so they know you are there. Do not lift anything heavier than you can comfortably lift. \nKnow your own limits. This is not a race. We will be working on and maintaining this trail for years to come. Take plenty of breaks. Make sure to drink plenty of water\, even when it’s cold outside. \nThere are holes in the ground to step in\, branches to trip over\, thorns\, wasps\, poison ivy (fortunately not too much of that on this segment of trail)\, ticks\, chiggers\, and other hazards. Please be cautious. \nHave a good time. This is a scenic area. There are box turtles\, heron\, woodpeckers\, deer\, beaver\, and other wildlife in this area as well as scenic views of the lake. \nWe have the tools that will be needed. \nThanks for your service. \nJeff Brewer

We will also be removing trash and pulling invasive species in the area. \nThank you so much for all the help over the past workdays on the River Forest Trail. Bring lunch if you plan to work into the afternoon. SUMMARY:Eno River Section Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Saturday December 7th is our final FMST workday of 2024. We will be at meeting at 9AM-2PM at Penny’s Bend\, 3706 Snow Hill Rd in Durham\, at the junction of Snow Hill Road and Old Oxford Road. \nWe will Start off by walking a future potential reroute of the MST. Currently the trail leaves the woods at the Penny’s Bend parking area\, then crosses the Eno on the rather narrow bridge\, then heads back in the woods. For me my top three trail building priorities are building trail at Eno River State Park to close the two gaps in the MST; my third highest priority is to move the trail off the road at Old Oxford Road. \nThe plan is to route the trail under Old Oxford Road\, walk down the north side of the river\, and cross the river on the old bridge on the old Lynchburg and Durham Road\, a rail line that has not been used for decades. We currently cannot do this as the 100+ year old bridge is currently owned by Norfolk Southern\, but there are plans to acquire the rail line for a rails-to-trails project\, which may make this reroute possible. \nIf you have not crossed the river before on that railroad bridge\, you are in for an experience. \nAfter the walk\, the plan is an invasive species removal workday\, pulling privet along the MST where the trail follows the river at Penny’s Bend. Ten years ago\, one of the main trail maintenance tasks at Penny’s Bend was cutting back the privet and multiflora rose that continuously grew over the trail. Getting rid of the privet has fixed that problem. It is also allowing native plants to grow back. Some of you have helped on the privet removal in the past. This year it is a follow up\, pulling out mostly small privet growing up from seeds. We will be hand pulling and using the weed wrenches. \nWe have been making great progress reducing the amount of invasives along the Eno River and the MST and hopefully we can continue this progress in December and next year. \nWe are also negotiating with State Parks over plans to take on trail maintenance and hopefully building of new trail at Eno River State Park. We are hoping to resume trail maintenance there in January. \nFor this workday you will need to wear work clothes you can get dirty\, boots or solid shoes\, and bring water. Bring lunch if you plan to work into the afternoon. In the event of adverse weather\, the workday will be canceled or postponed\, and an email to this effect will be sent out. \nTools will be provided. \nSee you on the trail!\nFred \nFor more information or to RSVP email to fred.dietrich@duke.edu

SUMMARY:Special Eno River Workday - Planting Trees
DESCRIPTION:Special workday this Saturday\, January 18th\, 10AM\, meeting at the vacant lot next to 317 Omega Road in Durham. We will be planting trees!  Last summer we put in an order of trees with the NC Forest Service and they just arrived! These are native trees\, wet root trees that we can plant along the river. A mixture of hardwoods and pines. \nThe story is there were a lot of large trees in that area that got cut down when a new sewer line was installed. We started to plant trees\, but despite Durham water management only having a 10-foot-wide access easement out there\, they mowed a strip from 30 to 150 wide. The lack of tree roots out there is a huge erosion problem. Last year they finally agreed to mow only their 10-foot easement. Thus we can plant trees in that area\, outside the 10-foot easement. \nFor this Saturday there is a chance of rain\, so dress appropriately. \nWe will provide the tools. \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu

SUMMARY:Two FMST Eno River workdays this weekend\, Saturday and Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Our first regularly scheduled Eno River FMST workday of 2025 is this Saturday January 25th\, 9AM meeting at the Fews Ford area Eno River State Park\, 6101 Cole Mill Road. The very end of the road. This will be doing trail repair work on the Cox Mountain Trail. \nThe second workday is Sunday\, January 26th\, 9AM meeting at the River Forest Park Parking Area\, 1000 Windermere Drive in Durham. This will be planting trees along the MST. \nWhy two workdays? Last summer we put in an order of trees with the NC Forest Service\, and a week ago they arrived and they need to be put in the ground! These are native trees\, wet root trees that we can plant along the river. A mixture of hardwoods and pines. \nThe story is there were a lot of large trees in that area behind the River Forest and Eno Trace neighborhoods that got cut down when a new sewer line was installed. We started to plant trees\, but despite Durham Water Management only having a 10-foot-wide access easement out there\, they mowed a strip from 30 to 150 wide. The lack of tree roots out there is a huge erosion problem and also results in a lack of shade in the summer. Last year they finally agreed to mow only their 10-foot easement. Now we can plant trees in the area outside the 10-foot easement. \nYou will need to dress appropriately for the weather\, though the forecast for this weekend is great\, compared to the past week. Warmer and not raining or snowing. \nWe will provide tools. You will need to dress appropriately for the weather\, wear boots or solid shoes and bring work gloves and water\, snack; lunch if you plan to stay all day. \nRSVP to fred.dietrich@duke.edu \nSee you on the trail!\nFred

SUMMARY:Annual Durham to Hillsborough hike (rescheduled) - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a rescheduled hike of the biggest gap in the Mountains-to-Sea Trail between Durham and Hillsborough.   For Spanish: https://conta.cc/47HglzP \nDate: Feb 1\, 2025\nRain Date: Feb 2\, 2025 \nMeeting Location: We’ll meet at 9 AM at the Eno River Parking Deck at the end of Nash and Kollock Street\, Hillsborough (36.073609291646854\, -79.10019701763281). This is adjacent to the Weaver Street Market\, a great place to pick up some trail snacks (but please don’t park in their lot for the duration of the hike). \nStarting Point: We will then leave half the cars in the (free) parking deck and carpool to our starting point\, the Cox Mountain trailhead in the Few’s Ford section of the Eno River State Park\, at the at the end of Cole Mill Road (6101 Cole Mill Road\, Durham). The ERSP has multiple parking areas\, we will meet at the one farthest into the park (go straight past the first three right turns and the last left turn). \nAt the end of the hike\, we will again carpool from Hillsborough back to the Cox Mountain parking area and those cars parked there. \nImportant: About half this hike will be a bushwack: over unmaintained social or no trail\, uneven ground with possible holes\, through sections of high brush\, crossing drainages and one stream\, potentially marshy areas and some quite steep slopes. If the ground is wet\, there may be slippery sections. \nThe total hike is roughly 9 miles. In the past it has taken 6-7 hrs. \nThe hwy 70 bridge is the end of the bushwack section. \nThe hike will traverse: \n\nThe ERSP suspension bridge across the Eno\nThe river leg of the ERSP’s Cox Mountain trail\nPassing the historic Fanny Breeze homestead\nAbout 5 miles of bushwack to hwy 70\nThe James M. Johnston Nature Preserve trail *\nPass near The Historic Occoneechee Speedway *\nClassic American Homes Preservation Trust trail *\nAgain crossing the Eno *\nPassing the Oxbow (Native American) Archaeology Site\nWestward on Hillsborough’s Riverwalk\nPast the Occaneechi (Native American) Village Replica Site\nAnd finally back to the parking deck and the parked cars.\n\n* There is a strong possibility that these segments will be the newest additions to the Eno River State Park by the hike date. \nIf you can join us: Please respond by email to Bill.Boyarsky@gmail.com by Jan 29\, 2025 — your response puts you on the notification list for update\, postponement\, or cancellation messages. \nWhat to bring: You will need to wear appropriate-for-the-weather clothes (that can get muddy or wet)\, solid shoes or boots\, and bring lunch\, snacks\, and water. \nCancellation: If the hike is postponed or canceled due to bad weather or high water\, an email will be sent out no later than 8 pm the preceding day (to the RSVP list). \nHope to be hiking with you.\nBill (& Fred)\nFriends of the MST Task Force Leaders\, Orange County (& Eno)
