SUMMARY:Bentonville Battlefield Workday
DESCRIPTION:Come on out for the first workday at the new stretch of trail at Bentonville Battlefield. The trail has been cleared mechanically (as you can see in the photo) and the next step is to clear the remaining brush away. We will be raking and pulling the heavy debris off the trail\, clipping overhanging branches away\, all the finish work – it’s labor intensive\, but you don’t need any special skills. This is great work for well supervised younger trail workers\, too! We’ll be joined by the Friends of Bentonville Battlefield and Friends of Johnston County Parks. \n  \nWHEN: Saturday\, June 3rd\, National Trails Day\, 9 am. \n  \nWHERE: Meet at the Bentonville Battlefield Visitor Center\, 5466 Harper House Rd\, Four Oaks\, NC 27524\, and we’ll talk safety and split up into work groups there. There are bathrooms at the Visitor Center but not out along the work locations. Sometimes GPS can take you to the Cole Plantation trail head\, make sure you head to the Visitor Center. \n  \nWHAT TO BRING: heavy rakes\, loppers\, clippers\, NO POWER TOOLS\, extra water\, gloves\, bug spray (it’s tick season\, so make sure you are prepared) snacks\, sun screen (some parts of the trail are sunnier than you’d expect). Please make sure to label your tools so that yours go home with you. \n  \nWEAR: sturdy shoes\, long pants and long socks. There are briars\, so either wear long sleeves or be on the lookout so as not to be scratched. \n  \nPizza lunch will be provided by Friends of Bentonville Battlefield. In order to help them know how much to order\, please RSVP by Wednesday\, May 31st.

Undertake different tasks with different tools throughout the day. Driving directions and maps of the specific MST Trailhead cleanup locations will be provided during the introduction and overview. Group leaders will help to guide volunteers to the trailhead. Group leaders will also collect tools from volunteers at the end of the cleanup and return them to the meeting spot.  Group leaders will report the number of trash bags and recycle bags filled and take a photo of the volunteers at the end of the cleanup. \n\nProject for the Day:   \n\nOur major task for the day is to clean up litter at MST designated parking lots/trailheads along the Falls Lake Trail East section of MST Segment 10. \nLead a small group in a general pick up of trash and recyclables at your assigned trailhead\nGather all trash at the trailhead\, count and report the number of trash & recycle bags\, and take a photo with volunteers\nReport the number of trash and recycle bags back to Jennifer at browndoj@gmail.com \nEncourage volunteers to go for a hike on the MST afterward\n\n\nWhat you will need: \nWork clothes and closed-toe shoes.  Proper clothing for the weather!  \nPlenty of water & snacks \nWork Gloves\, if you have your own\, if not we can provide you a pair \nLitter grabbers\, if you have your own\, if not we can provide those to you \nWork Safety: Share safety guidelines and directions to the small group \n\nUse tools carefully\nWear a safety vest at all times\nBe aware of your surroundings\, We are working very near active roadways and in parking lots. \nKnow your limits\, Do not lift anything heavier than you can comfortably lift.\nTake breaks\, drink water\nThere are holes\, steep banks\, branches\, thorns\, wasps\, poison ivy\, ticks\, chiggers\, and other hazards.  Please be cautious.
