SUMMARY:Eno River Section Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Our next FMST Eno River section workday is Saturday March 30th\, 9AM-3PM\, meeting at the Pump station trailhead\, 4023 Rivermont Road in Durham. \nOur main project will be to repair the steps on the Nancy Rhodes Creek trail bridge on the MST. \nSome of you worked on the repairs to that bridge or remember that the bridge was out of service for a while. \nThe story is that in early 2019 there was a heavy rainstorm with significant flooding. Flood water and flood debris damaged the bridge when the area was still rather muddy due to the flooding \nTalking with the park superintendent at the time he said it might take several years to get the bridge replaced. I told Keith I did not think it looked too bad and that we could just fix it. Want to know how we did this? You might want to ask Bill Boyarsky or John McCulloch. \nWe fixed it\, keeping the original beams and the same location. Most of the wood we replaced as the old decking was not in good shape even before the storm. Handrails were also added for safety reasons. When there is an intense rainstorm a deluge of water can come roaring down this stream. It is one of the problems with trail maintenance. 99.99% of the time everything is fine but there are those brief moments when all sorts of problems arise. \nAs usual\, we did our best to do an outstanding job and make sure the trail is safe\, sustainable\, pleasant – all those good things. In this case the bridge is still in great shape. However\, there is a part of this project that is not quite so good which is the steps up to the bridge. This also happens. We sometimes come up short of doing an outstanding job. In those cases we go back out and fix the problem\, which is what we plan to do on this March 30th workday. \nWhat was the steps on this end of the bridge has eroded down to a random pile of rocks\, leaving a rather large step up to the bridge. The other end of the bridge has the same problem. Those of you who know me well will know what I am going to say next: “I think we should have used larger rocks. Time to use the Spartacus.” \nIn fairness the volunteers working on those steps did a great job and the steps were fine for a while\, but water and erosion are powerful forces. Also\, all you great volunteers were starting to tire after rebuilding the bridge so we may not have put as much effort into the steps as we could have. \nIn addition to working on the bridge\, we will be taking other minor trail repair projects in this area. \nFor the workdays you will need to dress appropriately for the weather. Wear work clothes you can get dirty\, long pants\, boots or solid shoes\, bring water\, snacks\, lunch if you plan to stay all day. \nWe will provide tools. \n\nTo attend the workday\, please RSVP to dietrich@duke.edu and to be added to the Eno River workday notification email list\, please contact FMST Task Force Leader Fred Dietrich. \nUpcoming workdays \nSaturday  April 27th\, 2024\, 9AM-2PM \nSaturday May 25th\, 2024\, 9AM-2PM FMST Eno River section picnic! \nSaturday \, June 1st  2024 9AM-2PM National Trails Day

SUMMARY:Trail Workday in Bladen County (Turnbull Creek)
DESCRIPTION:Come on out for a workday at the new stretch of trail along Turnbull Creek at Bladen Lakes State Forest. The trail has been cleared mechanically to provide access for recently completed geo-tech testing for a future 185-foot trail bridge over Turnbull Creek. The next step in creating this new trail is to clear any remaining debris and smooth out rough areas of soil. We will rake soil flat\, pull debris off the trail\, and cut away any remaining saplings or branches. It’s a labor intensive task\, but you don’t need any special skills and the impact will be huge! \nWHEN: Saturday\, April 13\, 10:00 am. \nWHERE: Meet at Camp Chamblee in Bladen Lakes State Forest. It is a primitive campground at the end of the dirt road “Camp Chamblee Trail” as accessed from Sweet Home Church Road. There we will discuss safety\, go over the work plan and distribute tools. Sometimes GPS will try to direct you to Camp Chamblee from the West along forest roads\, but this is not possible as there is no vehicular bridge over Turnbull Creek. Please connect onto Camp Chamblee Trail from Sweet Home Church Road. \nWHAT TO BRING: heavy rakes\, loppers\, clippers\, NO POWER TOOLS\, extra water\, gloves\, bug spray (it’s tick season\, so make sure you are prepared) snacks\, sun screen (some parts of the trail are sunnier than you’d expect). Please make sure to label your tools so that yours go home with you. If you don’t have any of these tools\, don’t worry\, we can provide what is needed. \nWEAR: sturdy shoes\, long pants and long socks. There are briars\, so either wear long sleeves or be on the lookout so as not to be scratched. \nCOMPLIMENTARY LUNCH: Sandwiches and chips will be provided for attendees. To help us know how much to order\, please RSVP by Wednesday\, April 10th. If you have special dietary restrictions please let us know in advance so we can accommodate those needs. \nBen Jones\, MHS\, MLA\nCoastal Crescent Project Manager\nFriends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail \nbjones@mountainstoseatrail.org

SUMMARY:Falls Lake MST Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Dear Falls Lake Volunteer\, \nFalls Lake Workday: Come help with trail work on the MST on Sunday\, April 14\, 2024! We will work on Sunday to avoid Turkey Hunting Season. Please RSVP to jdbrewer104@gmail.com or 919-900-0483 for this workday by April 11\, 2024. \nMeeting Spot at 9:00 AM: All interested should meet at Food Lion parking lot at the intersection of Patterson/Sherron and Highway 98. The address for your GPS is 121 Sherron Rd.\, Durham\, NC 27703. After we meet\, we will split up into project groups and “scatter out” to do our trail work. This workday is being limited to 75 volunteers to accommodate our current projects. \nProjects for the Day are: \n\nChainsaw Crew Assistance: With all the recent weather our chainsaw crews will need to help moving limbs and debris off the trail after they cut it. Our sawyers have received the necessary training to cut trees at Falls Lake.\nSpring Trail Maintenance: We will divide up into small groups and walk around 6 miles to cut back overgrowth to get ready for summer. We have 63 miles of trail at Falls Lake to cover.\nCampsite installation at the Falls Lake Dam for a LNT Campsite with Grace as our Project Leader. This is project is limited to 10 volunteers. It also has a separate meeting spot at the Falls Lake Dam.\nTrash removal at trail heads and the lake shoreline: Our most cheerful volunteers Jennifer and Iwona will lead this effort to protect the drinking water of our community. Nobody likes to see trash along the trail and shoreline!\nPaint that white MST Blaze: We always need to freshen up our white blaze on the trees for our 63 miles of trail at Falls Lake.\n\nThanks to Great Outdoor Provision Company for sponsoring our breakfast from Chick-fil-A® at our workdays. Thanks to Starbucks off Falls of Neuse Road and Durant Road for the coffee. Thanks to REI Co-op\, whose 2023 gift of $15\,000 supports our efforts with (among other things) signage improvement\, updates to trail guides\, the purchase of new tools\, and tool repairs. \nMake sure you bring plenty of water\, bag lunch\, and gloves. We supply all the tools and projects. \nThe Falls Lake Task Force leaders recently had a meeting to discuss our weather policy for workdays if bad weather is present. If the workday is canceled a mass email will be sent by 9:00 PM on Friday. So please check your email first thing in the morning before leaving. \nIf you are new at trail work\, please let us know and we will pair you up with an experienced person. \nWhat you will need: Work clothes and solid shoes or hiking boots. Proper clothing for the Weather! Plenty of water\, lunch\, work gloves\, if you have them (If not\, we have some) \nWork Safely: This is the most important thing\, and our main goal. \nIn particular: \nUse tools carefully. If you do not know how to use a particular tool\, or what to do in a particular circumstance please ask. Do not work too close together and be careful with rakes\, shovels\, and mattocks to avoid hitting the person next to you. When walking past another volunteer\, please say something so they know you are there. Do not lift anything heavier than you can comfortably lift. \nKnow your own limits. This is not a race. We will be working on and maintaining this trail for years to come. Take plenty of breaks. Make sure to drink plenty of water\, even when it is cold outside. \nThere are holes in the ground to step in\, branches to trip over\, thorns\, wasps\, poison ivy (fortunately not too much of that on this segment of trail)\, ticks\, chiggers\, and other hazards. Please be cautious. \nHave a good time. This is a scenic area. There are box turtles\, heron\, woodpeckers\, deer\, beaver\, and other wildlife in this area as well as scenic views of the lake. \nWe have the tools that will be needed. \nTasks for this workday. \nCutting branches and logs across the trail: We have clippers\, small saws\, and a chainsaw for this purpose. All of the chainsaw work needs to be done by a certified person at the workday. In general\, while standing on the trail you want to cut branches back to an arm’s length on both sides and above your head. When clipping a branch that extends over the trail\, try to cut the branch at the trunk of the tree or bush. When there is a small tree or bush in the trail\, do not cut it at the ground\, but cut it ~3′ above the ground to make it easier to dig out/pull out. Cut off at ground level they will tend to grow back from the roots. When cutting branches\, please drag them off the trail. If you end up clipping poison ivy\, make sure to drag it well off the trail with the clippers. \nDragging logs off the trail: There are a significant number of logs and branches lying across the trail route. These need to be dragged to the side. Many are so rotted they can most easily be removed with a shovel. \nTrash: We have trash bags to pick up trash along the way. Fortunately\, this part of the park is relatively clean so we will not have too much trash to remove. The main trash that we want to try to remove on this workday is the barbed wire and other fence wire that in places crosses the trail. Please wear leather gloves and safety glasses and use caution in cutting wire. We will carry the trash out to one of the ends of this trail or it can be carried back to the trailer. \nRaking the trail: It is necessary to rake the trail tread clear of leaves\, branches\, other debris so that we know where we need to level the trail\, fill holes\, etc. Please use caution while raking to avoid poking others with the rake handle. \nPulling out small saplings from the trail tread: There will be some small saplings in the trail tread. If these are cut off\, they tend to grow back from the roots\, so we need to either pull them by hand (if they are very small)\, dig them out with a mattock\, or if they are up to an inch in diameter\, pull them out with the weed wrench. \nFilling holes: These need to be filled if they are within the 2′ wide trail tread\, or if they are within several feet of the trail on either side. We have shovels and buckets for this purpose. \nLeveling the trail tread: Walking across the side of a hill is tiring. The finished trail tread should be\, in cross section\, close to level. We have mattocks and rakes for this purpose. On this section of trail\, we cross multiple drainage dips\, and have quite a bit of side hill trail to build. In addition to the side hill work\, much of the trail route has various lumps and bumps that need to be leveled. \nStream crossings: There are multiple small stream crossings along this route. We will not be working on these on this workday\, but in the future\, we plan to build small bridges across several of these. \nThanks for your service\, \nJeff Brewer

SUMMARY:Eno River Section Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Our next FMST Eno River section workday is this Saturday April 27\, 9AM-2PM meeting at the West Point on the Eno Trail parking lot on Roxboro Street\, 5252 North Roxboro Street in Durham. This is the parking lot on the North side of the Eno\, not the main entrance to West Point. \nWe will be working on repairs to the MST between West Point on the Eno and River Forest Park. Some of you worked on the rebuilding of this trail after it was destroyed by the installation of a new sewer line. The trail overall looks good\, though there are spots which desperately need maintenance. I continue to work with City of Durham Water Management to try to allow more trees to grow up along the trail replacing those removed when the city clear cut this area. \nThe main projects this Saturday will be: \n1)     Trail repair. There are several locations where due to the lack of trees there are erosion issues and we will be adding rock\, gravel\, soil to repair the trail and reduce the erosion problem. \n2)     Trash removal. There is some trash from recent flooding out there\, as well as some old trash. Over the years we have worked on removing trash from this area and the area is much cleaner than it used to be. If the weather is warm enough and the water level low enough\, we may work on removing a large chunk of old storm sewer pipe from the river. If you are willing to get your feet wet\, this might be a project for you. \n3)     Removal of invasive species\, particularly privet. We have made good progress reducing the amount of tree of heaven\, mimosa\, English ivy\, mahonia\, Bradford pear\, Japanese wisteria\, and privet along this section of the river\, but there is still more to remove. This will be with the weed wrenches and hand pulling. \n4)     Trimming the trail. Spring is here\, and the trail is starting to get overgrown\n \n\nFor the workdays you will need to dress appropriately for the weather. Wear work clothes you can get dirty\, long pants\, boots or solid shoes\, bring water\, snacks\, lunch if you plan to stay all day.  We will provide tools. \nRSVP to dietrich@duke.edu

SUMMARY:Trail Workday in Bladen County (Turnbull Creek)
DESCRIPTION:Come on out for our 2nd workday at the new stretch of trail along Turnbull Creek at Bladen Lakes State Forest. The trail has been cleared mechanically to provide access for recently completed geo-tech testing for a future 185-foot trail bridge over Turnbull Creek. The next step in creating this new trail is to clear remaining debris and smooth out rough areas of soil. We will rake soil flat\, pull debris off the trail\, and cut away any remaining saplings or branches. It’s a labor intensive task\, but you don’t need any special skills and the impact will be huge! Complimentary lunch included! \nWHEN: Friday\, May 31\, 2024 10:00 am. To help us know how much to order\, please RSVP to bjones@mountainstoseatrail.org by end of day on Wednesday\, May 29th. \nBen Jones\, MHS\, MLA\nCoastal Crescent Project Manager\nFriends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail \nbjones@mountainstoseatrail.org

SUMMARY:Falls Lake Trail Workday - National Trails Day
DESCRIPTION:Come help with trail work on the MST on Saturday June 1\, 2024! On June 1 we will celebrate National Trails Day across America! We will provide FREE Event T-shirts for this event while supplies last! \nPlease RSVP to jdbrewer104@gmail.com or 919-900-0483 for our workday by May 30\, 2024. \nMeeting Spot at 9:00 AM – All interested should meet at Food Lion parking lot at the intersection of Patterson/Sherron and Highway 98. The address for your GPS is 121 Sherron Rd.\, Durham\, NC 27703. After we meet we will split up into project groups and “scatter out” to do our trail work. This workday is being limited to 75 volunteers to accommodate our current projects. \n1. Chainsaw Crew Assistance. With all of the recent weather our chainsaw crews will need to help moving limbs and debris off the trail after they cut it. Our sawyers have received the necessary training to cut trees at Falls Lake. \n2. Spring Trail Maintenance – We will divide up into small groups and walk around 6 miles to cut back overgrowth to get ready for summer. We have 63 miles of trail at Falls Lake to cover. \n3. Section 22 East – We need 8 volunteers to remove sand from a bridge foundation to help water flow correctly under this bridge. Sediment runoff from uphill has caused this issue. It is truly a sand soil mixture and not a piedmont clay. Please bring a shovel and be prepared for a 1 mile hike to the worksite. Steve T. and Dale E. will be your project leaders. \n4. Panther Creek Loop – We need 10 volunteers to install a short boardwalk. The bulk of this jobsite is moving the building supplies to the jobsite. Mixing concrete will also take place. We have installed several of these type of boardwalks with success at Falls Lake. John P. and Eric M. will be your project leaders. \n5. Panther Creek Loop – We need 8 volunteers to work with David Bland on some tread work and we have 1 mud hole to address to help finish off this task. Shovels will be the tool of choice for this work as in the past. \n6. Trash removal at trail heads and the lake shoreline. Our most cheerful volunteers\, Jennifer and Iwona\, will lead this effort to protect the drinking water of our community. Nobody likes to see trash along the trail and shoreline! \n7. Paint that white MST Blaze – we always need to freshen up our white blaze on the trees for our 63 miles of trail at Falls Lake \nThanks to Great Outdoor Provision Company for sponsoring our breakfast from Chick-fil-A at our workdays. We supply all of the tools and projects. \nThe Falls Lake Task Force leaders recently had a meeting to discuss our weather policy for workdays if bad weather is present. If the workday is canceled a mass email will be sent by 9:00 PM on Friday. So please check your email first thing in the morning before leaving.\nIf you are new at trail work please let us know and we will pair you up with an experienced person. \nWhat you will need.\nWork clothes and solid shoes or hiking boots. Proper Clothing for the Weather!\nPlenty of water\nLunch\nWork gloves\, if you have them (If not\, we have some) \nWork Safely. This is the most important thing\, and our main goal.\nIn particular: \nUse tools carefully. Make sure to drink plenty of water\, even when it’s cold outside. There are box turtles\, heron\, woodpeckers\, deer\, beaver\, and other wildlife in this area as well as scenic views of the lake \nParticular tasks for this workday. \nCutting branches and logs across the trail:\nWe have clippers\, small saws\, and a chainsaw for this purpose. All of the chainsaw work needs to be done by a certified person at the workday. In general\, while standing on the trail you want to cut branches back to an arms length on both sides and above your head. In particular if you end up clipping poison ivy\, make sure to drag it well off the trail with the clippers. \nDragging logs off the trail.\nThere are a significant number of logs and branches lying across the trail route. These need to be dragged to the side. Many are so rotted they can most easily be removed with a shovel. \nTrash\nWe have trash bags to pick up trash along the way. Fortunately this part of the park is relatively clean so we will not have too much trash to remove. The main trash that we want to try to remove on this workday is the barbed wire and other fence wire that in places crosses the trail. Please wear leather gloves and safety glasses and use caution in cutting wire. We will carry the trash out to one of the ends of this trail or it can be carried back to the trailer. \nRaking the trail\nIt is necessary to rake the trail tread clear of leaves\, branches\, other debris so that we know where we need to level the trail\, fill holes\, etc. Please use caution while raking to avoid poking others with the rake handle. \nPulling out small saplings from the trail tread\nThere will be some small saplings in the trail tread. If these are cut off they tend to grow back from the roots\, so we need to either pull them by hand (if they are very small)\, dig them out with a mattocks\, or if they are up to an inch in diameter\, pull them out with the weed wrench. \nFilling holes\nThese need to be filled if they are within the 2′ wide trail tread\, or if they are within several feet of the trail on either side. We have shovels and buckets for this purpose. \nLeveling the trail tread\nWalking across the side of a hill is tiring. The finished trail tread should be\, in cross section\, close to level. We have mattocks and rakes for this purpose. On this section of trail we cross multiple drainage dips\, and have quite a bit of side hill trail to build. In addition to the side hill work\, much of the trail route has various lumps and bumps that need to be leveled. \nStream crossings\nThere are multiple small stream crossings along this route. We will not be working on these on this workday\, but in the future we plan to build small bridges across several of these. \nThanks for your service.\nJeff Brewer \nTo be added to the email notification list to receive Falls Lake workday announcements and details\, email jdbrewer104@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Eno River Section Trail Workday/Annual Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Our next FMST Eno River section workday is Saturday June 1st\, 9AM-2PM meeting at the West Point on the Eno Trail parking lot on Roxboro Street\, 5251 North Roxboro Street in Durham. This is the parking lot on the North side of the Eno\, not the main entrance to West Point. \n\nWe will be continuing work on repairs to the MST between West Point on the Eno and River Forest Park that some of you helped on in April. SUMMARY:Trail Maintenance Workday at Bentonville Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and Friends of Johnston County Parks welcome all those interested in helping complete quarterly maintenance along a footpath trail through Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site in Four Oaks\, NC. This quarterly maintenance workday is the second in a series of four for 2024. \nVolunteers are needed at Bentonville on Saturday\, June 29th to help clear the stretch of trail between the new Bullpen trailhead and the Marching of the Armies trailhead. The trail is brand new as of Fall 2023 and needs clearing of the overgrowth and fallen brush. Work will include raking and pulling the heavy debris off the trail\, clipping overhanging branches away\, lopping off new growth\, and all other finish work – it’s labor intensive\, but no special skills are needed. In fact\, this is great work for well-supervised younger trail workers\, too! \nVolunteers should meet at the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site Visitor Center at 9 AM for an introductory safety talk\, to sign a workday waiver and mark hours driven to site\, and to be split up into work groups (dependent on number of volunteers). We encourage people to bring a water bottle and snacks for your trip; we will have bottles of water and snacks for those who can’t. We also encourage you to bring your own tools as we are limited\, but we will also bring a handful of tools for those who don’t have any. While not required\, please RSVP by Wednesday\, June 26th so I can get an accurate count of volunteers: https://forms.gle/6x3Phjcxf7bnnQ5U9 \nWHEN: Saturday\, June 29th from 9 AM to 12 PM \nWHERE: 5466 Harper House Rd\, Four Oaks\, NC 27524  https://maps.app.goo.gl/KZEZ4TgLN8hEq5AK9 \nWHAT TO WEAR: sturdy shoes\, long pants\, and long socks \nWHAT TO BRING: heavy rakes\, loppers\, clippers\, NO POWER TOOLS\, extra water\, gloves\, bug spray\, snacks\, and sunscreen \nMain Contact: Austin Cross\, Task Force Leader\, Friends of Johnston County Parks austin.a.cross1993@gmail.com; (984) 202-3284

SUMMARY:Eno River Section Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:It is time to start up the Fall FMST Eno River workdays! \nOur first workday is Saturday September 28th\, meeting at 9AM-2PM at 317 Omega Road. We have various projects working on this segment of the MST -repairing trail\, completing a short trail reroute to move the trail away from the sewer line\, removing trash\, removing invasive species. \nThis past spring Durham Water Management mowed a 10 foot wide easement along the River Forest section\, a vast improvement over the 30 -50 foot wide easement they had mowed in the past. Thus next January/February we will be able to plant native trees out in this area to help restore the area and provide more shade for the trail. \nFor this workday you will need to wear work clothes you can get dirty\, boots or solid shoes\, and bring sunscreen\, insect repellent\, water. Bring lunch if you plan to work into the afternoon. In the event of adverse weather the workday will be canceled or postponed\, and an email to this effect will be sent out. \nTools will be provided \nOn a related issue I am looking for a volunteer to help on a specific project. At Old Oxford Road the MST crosses the rather narrow\, busy road bridge across the Eno. An alternative route would be to go under the bridge\, down the river a short distance\, and cross the river on a very nice old railroad bridge that has not been used for decades though is still owned by Norfolk Southern. At one point the City of Durham looked into buying this old rail line for a rails to trails project. Several times over the years I have looked into this again without success. I am rather busy\, so I would like to find someone who can look into this with the City of Durham Parks and Rec\, the Durham Trails and open space committee\, Army Corps of Engineers who own the surrounding land\, and Norfolk Southern\, and possibly others. Moving the trail of the road at this location will be a huge improvement in the trail. Let me know if you are interested. \nSee you on the trail! \nFred \nFor more information or to RSVP email to fred.dietrich@duke.edu \n
